It's almost time to plant onion seeds! Let me help you

Is it snowing where you live? Is it wet and cold and horrible? Yes, here, too.

But believe it or not, it's time to start onion seeds!  I have started mine around Valentine's day for over 15 years, which is a little strange: associating valentine's with onions instead of chocolate and roses, but that's the kind of girl I am.

I grow beautiful onions, if I do say so myself.  Last year, I filmed tutorials on how to start onions from seed, how to take care of them, feed, transplant, weed, harvest and store them.  These movie tutorials were pretty popular on my YouTube channel, so thought I'd direct you to them to help you make your onion growing experience as successful as mine!  You're welcome.

  1. What kind of onions do you grow? You are living in Washington state so it seems that there's a good chance you might grow Walla Walla onions. We can grow Vidalia around here if we irrigate just right.

    1. I grow Walla wallas, as well as copras, because they are great for storage!

    2. I have to look into copras as I have not heard of them. Danke!

  2. I'll have to skip on onion sowing this year. Simply no place to put them.
But I'll plant some, well probably more than some, this year though!

    1. You know, you could throw some seeds in a container and grow them that way!

    2. By no place I mean no place inside. No greenhouse, only a polytunnel and temperatures can drop sharply here, even up till midsummer.

    2. Quick question, I've been watching your videos for growing onions (it's my first time and I'm so thankful for your help!!) They're still inside and just got their first 'hair cut' about a week ago..They've already grown back and flopped over, should I give them another cut? (It will be about a month still before I harden them off..I'm growing ailsa). Thanks for any advice!! :)

    3. Howdy there! Glad you like my video series!
Let me see if I can help you, but let me ask some questions first:
How long ago did you start the seeds?
How tall are they now (inches?).
      Let's go from there!

  4. I started my seeds back around Valentine's Day and when they were about 7 inches, I pinched them back to 3 inches which was the beginning of March. Today they stand about 5-5.5 inches tall.

Thank you thank you for your help!! It's so exciting growing and trying new plants!

    1. I wonder if they are getting leggy. Are you growing them inside a greenhouse or underneath grow lights? If you only have them in a window, they might not be getting enough light and grow leggy, which is they grow too fast and high, which makes them less strong and resilient.

  5. They're under a grow light my sweet hubby made for my plants and look thick, not leggy like..That is a good thought though and I'll up it another hr under the lights just in case they are leggy. Thank you

    1. Awesome! It sounds like you are okay then! They should be under the grow light 14 to 16 hours a day.
