Homesteading in Paradise - October 2016 Highlights

What an action-packed month October was!  I'm feeling a little dazed, actually, in a good but exhausted way.

It's a good thing that the sky has rained buckets, filling streams, rivers and puddles, turning the pig and goat pastures into a mucky mess.  It's a perfect time to sit by the wood stove fire and knit.  And cook.  And edit countless movie clips into our highlights-of-the-month movie.

  1. Fantastic! Love the sound track of the rain and no wonder. We get so little of it here. But today this will end. Forecast: 80% chance of Rain. Not showers. Rain. Also love the pigs running in slow motion! What a hoot! and then the dog. Bliss of a dog on a couch. And focus when waiting for a treat. Nice. Big sigh.

      Luke took the footage of the pigs running in slow mo. I can't stop laughing watching that. It's a little intimidating having these huge pigs run towards you, I tell ya!

    2. I once was feeding a herd of about 30 horses in a windy downpour when they all turned as a unit and came running at us. So I know what you mean about stampeding pigs!

      Yes, I can now begin executing my plans for the winter garden and landscaping. Hurrah!

  2. Loved the video.I came in from chores and working outside and sat down for a break. I enjoyed your video while taking a break. Made my break that much nicer!
    Your dog reminds me of my dogs when sleeping and having there pup dreams, super cute.

    I had a question about kraut. How long is the Kraut suppose to ferment for? I didn't know if there was a set time or not. Thanks.

      Glad you liked the video!
      The sauerkraut ferments until it's done bubbling, which takes between 7 and 14 days or so depending on the temperature of where it's fermenting. I have a tutorial on my blog if you search "how to make sauerkraut", and I also teach an online course on fermenting if you want to check that out!

    Mine is still bubbling so I will let it go a little while longer. I did check out your blog on how to make Kraut and it was a fantastic tutorial. I don't remember reading about how long to let it go. I guess I missed that part....oops. Thanks for clearing that up for me I was a little nervous about letting it go too long and ending up with something yucky.
    My family is pure German on my dads side. I have all grandpas German school books. My mom side is Irish Scotch. I love Kraut and figured I had better learn how to make it the German way. I am so excited about doing this.

    Next year when I am milking my goats full time again I am going to take your online course in cheese making.I have not had the best results and want to turn out a better product.I watched the intro for the class and it looks wonderful. That will be a gift to myself next year. Thanks for all your help.

  4. I forgot to add. Love, love the sweater!!! That must have been hard to make with all the color changes. I have been trying to find one like that to buy. Absolutely beautiful! It really looks nice on you.
